The study’s primary objective on the Pro Silesia network was to identify and understand the specific characteristics of National Urban Knowledge Networks (NMKN), particularly those operating within national borders. Additionally, the study aimed to assess their systemic features and institutional dimensions. Unlike well-researched international networks, national networks like Pro Silesia exhibit unique traits stemming from members’ greater geographical, cultural, and institutional proximity. The research focused on understanding how these factors influence knowledge exchange and the overall effectiveness of such networks. The following key objectives guided the study:
Identification of Key Network Characteristics
The study sought to analyze the structure of Pro Silesia, including its actors (municipalities, universities, businesses), primary knowledge exchange channels, and the main challenges encountered in collaboration. A comparative analysis was also conducted to examine the similarities and differences between Pro Silesia and similar international networks.
Analysis of Actor Diversity and Its Impact on Knowledge Exchange
One of the central research questions was whether the diversity of network members (in terms of city size, economic development level, and sectoral affiliation) affects the intensity of knowledge exchange and the effectiveness of collaboration. The study examined whether similarities among members facilitate information exchange or if diversity presents additional challenges.
Assessment of Systemic Features of the Network
A crucial aspect of the study was determining the extent to which the Pro Silesia network functions as a cohesive system. Three key systemic attributes were evaluated:
- Unified Function: The degree to which all network members share common goals and priorities.
- Coherence: The extent to which members form an integrated entity.
- Boundedness: The geographical and functional boundaries within which the network operates.
Comparison with International Urban Knowledge Networks
The study also aimed to compare Pro Silesia with Transnational Urban Knowledge Networks (TKMN). The objective was to determine whether national networks exhibit different systemic characteristics compared to international ones and how these differences impact knowledge exchange efficiency.
Recommendations for Network Optimization
Based on the study’s findings, recommendations were formulated to optimize resource utilization and improve the operational efficiency of the Pro Silesia network. The focus was on strengthening collaboration between cities, universities, and the private sector. The study provides valuable insights into the functioning of national knowledge networks, highlighting both their strengths and areas for improvement.
