Seminar in summer semester 20/21:
- group 3: every Wednesday, 3:00 pm
- group 2: every Wednesday, 4:45 pm
- group 1: every Wednesday, 18:30 pm
1. Attendance:
- Attendance is mandatory,
- A maximum of two (2) unexcused absences is permitted. An excused absence is one for which the student provides an official document relating to the reason of absence, e.g., a doctor’s note on letterhead, court documentation, etc.
- In case of at least 3 unjustified absences, the student loses the right to participate in the final exam.
- In case of force majeure or technical obstacles which may not be overcome and which prevent live participation in classes, the student is required to contact the teacher and determine an alternative way of participation in classes (before classes or immediately when the obstacles occur). If the student does not establish alternative participation rules or does not abide by the established rules, he/she fails the subject (fails classes and does not have the right to take the exam neither in the first nor in the second term).
2. Class grade (100 points):
- 60 points – three tests, 20 points each
- 20 points – homework assognments
- 20 points – class activity
- The class grade will be based on the sum of points from all the tests and homework assignments and class activity. In order to obtain a positive class grade, a total of at least 50 points must be obtained. In order to participate in the final exam, a student must have a positive grade from classes.
3. Tests
- 25th of March, 6th of May and 3rd of June (Thursdays) at 9:am
- The retake of these tests will take place on August 31st , at 9:00 AM. Only people who failed the classes can retake the tests.
- The tests will require providing solutions to problems.
- Weekly homework assignments are posted on the lecturer’s home page
- The solutions to homework assignments should be uploaded to a specified location on Moodle, before the given deadline
- Homework assignments can be corrected (exactly once). Corrected assignments are to be uploaded on moodle one week after the result of the first homework (!!!).
- It is clearly stated in the homework assignments that the answer should be a number in decimal notation, rounded to four digits. No points will be awarded for homeworks that do not comply with this rule
- Homework assignments do not have to be handed in on the provided templates. Students are allowed to use their own pieces of paper as long as they provide the final answer in a clearly visible place, in a box, and at the top of the solution. Not following this instruction or not providing the final answer will result in a zero mark for a given homework
- Students from each group will be divided into subgroups of three (if possible). You have a chance to choose your own groups. If you wish to do so, please e-mail me the names and index numbers of group members as well your group hour (3pm, 4:45pm, 6:30pm) till the 27th of February (Saturday)
- Before each class (starting from class 2.) every subgroup will be assigned one problem to solve (together).
- A representative of each subgroup (chosen by the subgroup) is required to present solutions to their problems during class if asked (through screen sharing with a commentary). I prefer solutions in a PDF format and in print, however nicely prepared solutions in handwriting will also be accepted.
- For every correct and presented solution every member of the subgroup will be awarded 1 group point (GP). If the solution has minor mistakes every member of the subgroup will be awarded 0.5 GP. Major mistakes in the solution, not preparing a presentation of the solution, not following the instructions from the previous point or not presenting the solution leads to 0 GP for each subgroup member.
- For a clear explanation of a correct solution, the presenter will be awarded 1 presenter point (PP). For a somewhat flawed explanation of a correct solution or a clear explanation of a solution with minor mistakes, the presenter will be awarded 0.5 PP. If the presenter shows clear incomprehension of the solution (no matter whether the solution is correct, has minor or major flaws) he/she will be penalised with -1 PP. Any other situation will result in no additional (deducted) points for the presenter
- Additional activity points may be awarded, for example for class activity, preparing an outstanding solution to a problem, etc.
- Activity will contribute 20 points to the class grade. Activity points for each student will be awarded based on his/her individual activity percentage score based on the formula: (GP+min(2,PP))/(times a group was asked to present + 2)
