Probability calculus

Seminar in winter semester 21/22:

Rules, notes, problem sets, homework assignments can be found at the lecturer’s home page

Attendance:

  • Attendance is mandatory,
  • A maximum of two (2) unexcused absences is permitted. An excused absence is one for which the student provides an official document relating to the reason, e.g., a doctor’s note on letterhead, court documentation, etc.
  • In case of three or more unexcused absences, the student automatically fails the course.

Class grade:

  • Class grades are awarded the outcomes of two tests, which are held in person (apart from those students who have an individual permission from the Dean, for whom the tests are oral or online, as established by the class tutor), team activity during classes and individual activity in moodle
  • Results from each test will contribute 30 points to the class grade. Tests will be announced at least 2 weeks in advance. Tests may be retaken (exactly once). The retakes will take place before the resit session.
  • Students from each group will be divided into subgroups. Before each class (starting from class 2.) subgroups will be asigned a problem to solve. A representative of each subgroup (chosen by the subgroup) is required to present solutions to their problems during class if asked.
  • For every correct and presented solution every member of the subgroup will be awarded 1 group point (GP). If the solution has minor mistakes every member of the subgroup will be awarded 0.5 GP. Major mistakes in the solution, not preparing a presentation of the solution, not following the instructions from the previous point or not presenting the solution leads to 0 GP for each subgroup member.
  • For a clear explanation of a correct solution, the presenter will be awarded 1 presenter point (PP). For a somewhat flawed explanation of a correct solution or a clear explanation of a solution with minor mistakes, the presenter will be awarded 0.5 PP. If the presenter shows clear incomprehension of the solution (no matter whether the solution is correct, has minor or major flaws) he/she will be penalised with -1 PP. Any other situation will result in no additional (deducted) points for the presenter
  • Activity will contribute 30 points to the class grade. Activity points for each student will be awarded based on his/her individual activity score according to the formula: (GP+min(2,PP))/(times a group was asked to present + 2)
  • Individual moodle activity is worth 10 points. Mandatory moodle activities (short tests) will be posted on the moodle course page. A student receives 1 point for each activity completed (max 10 points for 10 activities during the semester). Details about this type of activity will be provided during the lecture.
  • Team activity (worth max 30p) nor individual moodle activity (worth max 10p) may not be corrected
Homework assignments:
  • Homework assignments are posted on the lecturer’s home page
  • The solutions to homework assignments should be uploaded to a specified location on Moodle, before the given deadline
  • Homework assignments can be corrected (exactly once). Corrected assignments are to be uploaded on moodle two weeks after the original homework deadline.
  • It is clearly stated in the homework assignments that the answer should be a number in decimal notation, rounded to four digits. No points will be awarded for homeworks that do not comply with this rule
  • Homework assignments do not have to be handed in on the provided templates. Students are allowed to use their own pieces of paper as long as they provide the final answer in a clearly visible place, in a box, and at the top of the solution. Not following this instruction or not providing the final answer will result in a zero mark for a given homework
